The proposed 86-acre Little Stillwater Wetlands Mitigation Bank is located in Franklin Township, Harrison County, Ohio. The site is bounded to the north by US 250 and to the south by Little Stillwater Creek. The proposed mitigation bank will be constructed on land currently owned by Harrison County board of Commissioners. The Foundation will design, construct, and manage the site.
Emergent, scrub/shrub, and forested wetlands will be restored through microtopography, disruption of existing subsurface tiles, installation of ditch plugs, and supplemental plantings of native vegetation. This re-establishment of a high quality wetlands ecosystem will result in a gain in aquatic resource area and functions not currently present.
The existing wetlands present along the old creek meander bottoms and areas within the old field will be rehabilitated through invasive species control, restoration of hydrology with ditch plugs, disruption of the subsurface tile, and supplemental plantings of native vegetation. This enhancement of a low quality wetlands ecosystem does not result in a gain of aquatic resource area but does improve species diversity, therefore heightening, intensifying, and improving other resource functions.
